master’s programme, which is especially directed at law graduates from foreign
countries. Upon successful completion of the master’s programme, the academic
title of “Legum Magister” (LL.M.) will be awarded by the University of Freiburg.
The aim of the postgraduate Master’s programme is to convey the fundamentals of
German law; this includes two of the three legal areas – civil law, public law
and criminal law. Within the scope of a six month master’s thesis, the programme
enables students to focus on an individual subject area.

Hanse Law School is an international Law study programme, organised by three
co-operating universities, (Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Bremen
University and Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (Netherlands). The Hanse Law School
offers two similar Bachelor study programmes: Comparative and European Law

The Master of Laws Programme consists of one semester at our faculty in Dresden and one semester at one of our partner universities in Exter, Krakow, London, Prague, Seattle or Strasbourg.
The programme „International Studies in Intellectual Property Law” was established in 1999 by Professor Horst-Peter Götting, Professor of Civil Law and Intellectual Property Law at the Technische Universität Dresden. The programme was awarded a prize by the “Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft” (Foundation for German Science) and is supported by the “Deutschen Vereinigung für Gewerblichen Rechtsschutz und Urheberrecht e. V.” (GRUR). The course Master of International and European Business, Competition and Regulatory Law offered by the Law Department of the Freie Universität Berlin is intended to give young jurists and economists from businesses, law firms and public authorities the opportunity to gain in-depth, specialist knowledge in the areas of business and competition law as well as on regulation in the energy andelectronic communication sectors in order to enhance their professional skills. The degree can beattained in one year with full-time study but is also offered as a part-time course for those studentswith professional commitments.
The course is based on a learning concept which combines traditional “in-class” teaching on Friday sand Saturdays with electronic communication via the university’s internet platform and independent study. Apart from professors of business law, specialised legal practitioners from competition and regulation authorities and law firms with a great deal of case experience will instruct the students. The course allows the students to choose whether they wish to focus on energy or telecommunication law, enabling specialisation as required by their particular profession. The course language is English. Students will be mentored by tutors with knowledge, for example, of Russian, Polish and Spanish law who can communicate with them in their native language.

As economies all over the world increasingly shift from manufacturing products to creating ideas and knowledge, the need for specialized skills relating to intellectual property rights increases. However, until recently, education in the sector was seriously lagging behind, as IP was dealt with as a mere side topic in traditional legal studies.
The MIPLC has stepped into this gap and is now offering the first comprehensive LL.M. degree program in Europe devoted to intellectual property rights: "
Intellectual Property and Competition Law." Participation in the program equips postgraduates with the
knowledge and skills to deal with a variety of intellectual property issues in a global context at the most sophisticated level.

The faculty of law at Marburg University is a centre of legal training and research in the middle of Germany. With 80 faculty members, 2,000 fulltime students and a curriculum with more than 100 courses and seminars, it aims at training lawyers who are capable of coping with legal as well as economic and social problems and transactions. Marburg provides an excellent learning environment characterised by academic freedom, international orientation, small teaching groups right from the start and, by German standards, a reasonable student-teacher ratio. Specially for students from abroad our department features a Master’s programme (Magister Legum) as well as lectures and seminars in English. The general training for lawyers who want to practise in Germany consists of a 4-year university course ending with the First State Exam.
The Department
Law has been studied and taught in Marburg since 1527. The Faculty is one of the oldest continuously operating institutions of its kind in Germany. From its beginnings as the first protestant law school it was staffed with scholars of European recognition: Friedrich Carl von Savigny (1779–1861) studied and taught here. Among his students were the Brothers Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm. In 1882 Franz von Liszt (1851–1919), professor of Criminal Law, pronounced the “Marburg Programme” introducing the core principle of “special prevention” in the theory of punishment. He founded the International Society of Criminal Sciences. Alumni include the former president of the Federal Republic of Germany, Gustav Heinemann, and the former prime minister of Greece, Kostas Simitis.
Today special emphasis in research and education is being laid on Business Law including Financial Services Law as well as Media Law, Comparative Law, Sports Law, Criminology and 20th Century History of War Crimes. Moreover, a special post-graduate programme on Law and Medicine and extensive tutoring for a group of about 50 foreign law students, mostly within the Sokrates programme, are being offered.

The impact of globalization on sources and subjects of international law will be examined. Recent developments in the fields of the international economic law, the protection of the environment and State responsibility, as well as the relevant issues confronted in the international society over the last few years shall likewise be studied.
Emphasis shall be placed on subjects relating to the regulation of international trade, particularly the law of international trade, investments law and the settlement of disputes. In this context, special attention shall be given to subjects such as international arbitration, procedures before the World Trade Organization and ICSID.

The Master's program is divided into a nine-month study program, followed by a three-month period for the drafting of the Master's thesis. The program can be completed entirely in English, entirely in German or in a combination of both. The courses are held in German and/or in English.
Courses are assessed by a written or oral test. Following the style of the American system, a specific number of credit points is awarded for the completion of each course. A total of at least 45 credit points must be attained during the course of study. A further 15 credit points are awarded for the completion of the Master's thesis. Three-quarters of the final mark therefore comprises the marks achieved during the study program, whilst the remaining quarter is composed of the mark awarded for the Master's thesis.

The "European Legal Practice" programme (ELPIS) is a supplementary course of study that aims at enhancing the student's knowledge acquired during his standard studies leading to a national law degree. The participants receive training in European and Comparative Law, as well as in the legal systems of different EU countries. It is supposed to prepare the future lawyers for a transnational legal practice in the Common Market.
"European Legal Practice" has become a well-established programme within the last two decades. A great number of student and members of the academic staff have participated in the exchange among the partner universities. In due course unique teaching materials have been prepared, research projects on specific legal problems have been carried out and a series of workshops (summer academies) have been administered within the programme.
The exchange of members of the academic teaching staff has proven to be of great benefit for the reciprocal learning process of all participants. Contacts to experienced legal practicioners and the local bar associations complete the studies.
