The University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law has become an internationally recognized leader in legal edu-cation since its establishment in 1924 in Sacramento, California’s capital city. McGeorge offers advanced graduate law programs focusing on Transnational Business Practice, Water & Environmental Law, and U.S. Law & Policy to both U.S. and foreign-trained attorneys.

Study Program

LLM in Transnational Business Practice
The LLM in Transnational Business Practice trains lawyers to practice in the field of international business law. The degree further prepares lawyers for a career in the global economy. Students have the opportunity to en-gage in advanced scholarship by pur-suing a Master’s Thesis or Directed Research Project.

A program highlight is access to the McGeorge Global Center for Business & Development, which stands as the interface between the global economy and the legal profession. The Global Center facilitates scholarship and cur-ricular innovation and hosts a number of international events every year. Students earn the LLM in Transna-tional Business Practice after comple-tion of 24 units of study, full-time or part-time.

• Externship Track – The best way to learn something new is to practice. Students have the opportunity to ex-tern with a domestic or international law firm for class credit.

LLM in U.S. Law & Policy
The U.S. Law and Policy Program is designed specifically for foreign law-yers or graduates with a non-U.S. law degree. This is an ideal degree for those who wish to work in the U.S. or take a bar exam. Students earn the LLM in U.S. Law & Policy after comple-tion of 24 units of study. Students can complete the program in one year (2 semesters). There are two required courses, and students may choose to focus on specific substantive areas, such as:

• International or Domestic Business law
• Intellectual Property
• Civil and Constitutional
• Criminal Justice
• Environmental Law

LLM in Water & Environmental Law
The LLM in Water & Environmental Law Program emphasizes interdiscipli-nary natural resources classes; simula-tions and case studies; a robust field placement experience; and advanced substantive law course work. The combination of natural resources sci-ence, technology and economics, with strong legal coursework and hands-on training, makes this program unique among other natural resources law graduate degrees.

McGeorge’s program provides stu-dents with the opportunity to learn from a distinguished faculty and pro-gram team as well as from panels of experts who are focused on water and environmental law and the changing policies surrounding both.

The LLM in Water & Environmental Law Program consists of 24-units. Students can complete the program in either one or two years. Students also have the option to take courses online or in-person.

• LLM in Water & Environmental Law, U.S. Law Track – This track focuses on issues affecting the United States. It is designed for students with a law degree seeking to gain expertise in the growing field of environmental and natural resources law.

• LLM in Water & Environmental Law, Online – McGeorge’s online LLM in Water & Environmental Law Program is an advanced law degree designed for JD graduates who seek to gain exper-tise in this rapidly evolving area of practice. The program is taught through part-time, asynchronous courses that are fully online.

• LLM in Water & Environmental Law, International Track – This track is for law graduates interested in pursuing careers in government, non-governmental organizations, or private law firms dealing with international wa-ter and environmental issues. This program focuses on the unique laws, policies and political dynamics as it applies to water courses and other natural resources that are shared by two or more nations.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

McGeorge awards some academic merit and need-based scholarships to LLM and J.S.D students. These awards are made available by the allocation of University general funds, as well as the generosity of donors by means of endowed funds and alumni contributions.

Note: If you want to be considered for a scholarship, you must indicate it on your application. Applications are reviewed as they are submitted (rolling basis) and early applications are encouraged.

General Eligibility: All incoming LLM and JSD students are eligible for scholarship consideration.

Deadline: Funding is limited — students are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

International Programs Fund: Young Lawyers
For the LLM in Transnational Business Practice, partial and full scholarships are available to incoming students of Asian or Asian-American origin, or to incoming students who will be engaged in an Asia-Pacific law project while enrolled in the program.

LLM Programs Endowed Scholarship
For the LLM in Transnational Business Practice, partial scholarships are available for incoming students. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, and career intent.

Emil Schnellbacher Memorial Scholarship
For the LLM in Transnational Business Practice, partial scholarships are available to incoming students who have a demonstrated interest in German or Austrian affairs, or who are involved with public agencies.

Professor Stephen McCaffrey Scholarship for Water and Environmental Law
For the LLM and JSD in Water & Environmental Law, partial scholarships are available for incoming students. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, and career intent.

Need-Based Scholarship
For each of our LLM and JSD programs, partial scholarships are offered to incoming students based on financial need.

Merit-Based Scholarship
For each of our LLM and JSD programs, partial scholarships are offered based on strong academic qualifications.

Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation (RMMLF) Scholarship
The RMMLF offers scholarships to admitted LLM applicants who are to or enrolled full time at one of the Foundation’s Constituent Law Schools and who can demonstrate a commitment to the study of natural resources law (LLM in Water Resources Law). Scholarships may cover partial of full tuition.

Application requirements

To be eligible to apply to one of our LLM programs, the applicant must present evidence of:

Graduation from a school of law approved by the American Bar Association; or
Admission to the Bar in a foreign jurisdiction, or of a state in the United States; or
Graduation from a faculty of law in a foreign country whose educational authority has authorized that faculty to issue degrees in law.
